L’Étincelle qui ne voulait pas retomber
la légende de Sparkio
Chapitre 1 Le Feu

Et la petite étoile ouvrit les yeux.

A very long time ago — or maybe only last night — some children were listening to a story around a fire.
The sparks rose toward the sky… then fell back down. As sparks always do.
All but one.
That one wanted to know how the story ended.
So it kept on rising. Higher. And higher still.
So high that it became a star — the smallest star in all the sky.
Far below, a child pointed up at it: “Sparkio!”
And the little star opened his eyes.

From up there, Sparkio discovered a secret: every evening, behind the lit windows, someone is telling a story.
Dragons. Sea captains. Forests that talk.
He listened to every single one, and the same longing tickled all five of his points:
“Me too… I want to be the hero.”
So he practiced. He struck heroic poses. He cut himself capes out of clouds.
(The clouds did not always agree.)
Chapitre 3 La Brume
But one night, a gray mist rose over the world.
It never hurt anyone.
It only whispered in the children’s ears:
“Heroes are other people. Not you.”
And the children closed their books, and the stories lost their colors.
Sparkio dove in. He chased the mist away and set the dragons, the oceans and the forests glowing again.
He was the hero. At last!
But as soon as he left, the mist came back: while he was shining, the children had only watched.
He dove in again. And again.
And each time, he shone a little less.
Chapitre 4 La Chute

One night, he no longer had enough light to fly.
Sparkio fell. Nobody made a wish.
He landed in an ordinary bedroom, beside a book with gray pages and a child who wasn’t asleep.

Two small hands closed around him, ever so gently.
It was the first time anyone had ever taken care of Sparkio.
Chapitre 5 Le Seuil

— Tu as peur du noir ? demanda Sparkio.
Promis.
L’enfant regarda la page. Regarda Sparkio.
Et fit un pas.

“Are you afraid of the dark?” Sparkio asked.
“No,” said the child. “I’m afraid of that.”
And the child opened the gray book. Deep inside, something was calling.
Sparkio wanted to leap in, the way he always did.
Then he remembered all the children left outside while he shone in their place.
So he did the hardest thing of his whole life as a star.
He stayed at the edge.
“I can’t go in for you. But I’m not going anywhere. I’ll wait right here. I promise.”
The child looked at the page. Looked at Sparkio.
And took a step.
Chapitre 6 Le feu, c’est toi
Un pas — et la brume recula.
Deux pas — et une couleur revint.
L’enfant avait peur.
Alors quelque chose s’alluma.

— Tu vois, souffla Sparkio. Moi, je ne suis qu’une étincelle.
Le feu, c’est toi.
One step — and the mist drew back.
Two steps — and a color came back.
The child was afraid. And kept going anyway.
Deep in the story, a very small dragon had lost its way.
The child held out a hand, and together they found the path again.
Then something lit up. Not Sparkio’s light: a light that belonged to the child.
It filled the page, spilled out of the book…

…and came to warm the little star waiting at the edge.
“You see,” Sparkio whispered. “I’m only a spark.”
The fire is you.
Chapitre 7 La Promesse

That night, the child’s story did not fall back down. It rose into the sky and became a star.
Ever since, Sparkio has kept every story that children dare to live, in his workshop, somewhere between the sky and the bedrooms.
They call him the Keeper of Stories.
To every child, he makes the same promise:
“I’ll walk with you to the threshold. The heart of the adventure is yours. And at the end, I’ll be there.”
If one day, in the middle of an adventure, you can’t see him anymore… he hasn’t gone.
He’s waiting for you at the edge.

Tonight, somewhere, a page is still gray. And a little star is waiting at the edge.
